The Fight to Save the River

On March 10, the Suffolk County Legislature approved the construction of a new dam in Blydenburgh County Park without requiring a comprehensive environmental review, determining the project would not significantly impact the environment. This decision disregards substantial concerns raised by the Free the Nissequogue River Coalition. While deeply disappointing, the process is not over, as the project still requires permits from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

The Coalition continues advocating for a free-flowing Nissequogue River as the most fiscally responsible, climate-resilient, and ecologically sound path forward.
